It is a story of middle class family, but it is much much more than that. It is highly successful masterpiece of Hindi literature. It´s success lies in the ability to recreate human emotions and to deal with them beautifully. Dharmvir bharti seems to be the master of the art.
It makes some great philosophical remarks and illustrates it in the behavior of the characters. It confuses you to make you understand and decide for yourself- what is your version of reality. It exposes you to many facets of the life of same person. Various situations he falls into, in the name of affection, love or lust.
Story is very touching, it makes you feel somewhat heavier at heart. Conversations are beautifully imagined and bring you closer to reality. Even the most literary dialogues seem to be realistic, not made up.
Dharmvir Bhati has put his heart and soul into it, it is clearly visible. It is an emotional roller coaster ride. It would definitely leave you touched as it has touched many hearts.
Note: This book is in Hindi and ideally, I should be commenting on it in Hindi. But as I had just finished it, couldn´t help myself writing about it, immediately in whatever way I could. I shall write some more about it later and most probably in Hindi.

I quite agree. Haven’t read much to compare it with – but the book impressed me quite a lot when I read it last summers. Characters are appropriately complex and the end is particularly nice (I often judge stories by endings!).
Most definitely, character portrayal is very advanced in this particular novel.

I read Gunahon Ka Devta in 1997 after the death of Dr. Bharti. I was in 9th standard then and it made an long lasting impact on my innocent heart. I always potrayed love to be as pure as it existed in Sudha’s heart. I wanted me to be free from all malice and filth which usually comes in the hearts of teen agers. I am happy that i was able to live a clean teen age courtsey to Sudha but it became very difficult when i got adult. I wish that purity comes back into my heart. I beleive that every person should read the book before there teen age starts so that they can be aware of what pure love is that has been taught in our culture and remains the secret of the persistency INDIA has displayed over the millenioums. HATS OFF TO GUNAHON KA DEVTA AND TO MR. BHARTI. MAY THE SOUL REST IN PEACE.

it was really a fantastic novel.
after reading it i thought a lot about each character and the probable solution which could have helped the chandar and sudha to get out of misery is as follows.i think, had the father of sudha being not so supporter of castism as he was in the begining and had he shown his foresight of getting confirmed that whether sudha had any special feeling for chandar and then arranging her marriage , then their problems would have been solved much earlier.
but then the upto which their love ascended that would not have been posssible.
all i can say is that though chandar has been called by the author “gunahoon ka devta” as the title speaks ,actually he could’nt be called as such.
yeah he showed some his some weak character at some place but that can be forgiven since by physique he is just a human.
its often seen that we try to see our hero/god as some one who cannot do any mistake.but its not so easy for the person.
one thing i can assure un about myself that after reading it i found a growth & betterment in my character.i consider myself that i have brought my personality more closer to that chandar .

hi,i read gunahon ka devta two and half years past.i picked it up again but after reading some pages i could not daer to go further.when i read it first i went into complete different existence.but i cannot daer this time.chander and sudha,i wish they come live.purity is what is needed in heart,to feel it in true sense.but the class of the book is that in pures your heart rather then you being pure to read this.every one till the age of 17 should and must read the dook. it should be the religion.

First time i read this novel when i was in 9th Std.then i again read it when i was pursuing my Graduation then…..so many times …… but there is always a limit of everything. Every character has a very nice justification of itself,some times it jst looks like story of circumstances written by destiny…more u read it …u get more puzzled,it all based on ur own mental condition and yes on innocence level of your heart.
In last years of Dr. Bharti he himself was not much convinced with these characters …doesnt sound strange….but this is known as time ..which changes the meanings of so many things……
neways somebody written about lack of good hindi literature then i must suggest him to read Mrityunjay,Yugandhar,Mujhe chand chahiye,Draupadi,Chava,Todo Kara Tod0 …and so on..hope it will work.

i was just going through the comments.well to tell you it is fair to say when you feek like wise that that it is a story. but to tell you,it is a part of mr.bharti’s life incident.i would not give any justification to that, but just take me at the face value,it is true.secondly, we cannot or rather should not try and give a weighing measurement saying it will work out and this will not.emotions cannot be compaired. the point is, not in what mind frame one is, the point is in what frame of mind or mental state it drags you.a book will simply be a novel,just a mear story,but never an experience to live with and offcourse cherish it till the time one does not gets drowned in to it. are we not just reading it and not living it. i think we will have to have a bit of VAN GOUGH into us. I was searching for a picture of the book cover for adding this book on goodreads.com and stumbled on this page and i really felt very happy seeing so many comments. I read this book on a visit to Banaras when i was 16 or so and fell in love with it. I must have bought more than a dozen copies to gift to my friends.
Its really limit of sacrifice in love. All my life i struggled with the decision of Chander and what it did to Sudha. And being a nihilist too it bothered me a lot. i must have read more than 300 international books and found nothing that came close to it except “Asad Ka Ek Din” by Mohan Rakesh and “Bridges of Madison County” by Robert James Walller and may be even the Love Story.

I read this novel first time when I was in high school in 1977-78 and I had such a mind blowing impact on that I can share. I kept reading this novel every now and then for next 10 years. I was missing a copy of this for many years as I live in US so in my last India trip in 2007, this was on top of my buying list. In 70s Dr Dharmvir Bhari was Sampadak (chief editor ) of Dharmyoug Hindi saptahik and it was very hot topic of discussion in those days that It was real life experience of Dr Bharti.
Any way, excellent work and a must read novel.
Gunaho ka devta is the perfect blend of emotive world and the class stratified society. it is one of the finest work ever written with the true flavour of the happening of the million of indian middle class.

i picked up this novel in jaipur bus stand to pass the time with something serious stuff. but once picked i could not stop reading till it finished. indeed Chander is the character wich will always give morality and ethics some weight, otherwise the love we understand is full of lust and selfishness. we can hardly see such people like chander, but indeed after reading this novel we know what is the benchmark for the real love must be.
Just finished yesterday. Still my heart feels heavy. Don’t know how to get out of delima? Lekin kya kahani likhi hai bharti ji ne, aur aisa lagta hai ki isme kahi unki bhi kahani chupi hui hai. Just timeless story. A real masterpiece.

I once read a letter written by Dharmvir Bahrti’s sister that he would write it each day after his morning prayers and would read it out for his sis & mom everyday whatever he had written.
He once again relived the magic he created by his “Suraj ka satwa ghoda” but “Gunaho ka devta” stands more sensitive when you talk about human emotions. Sudhi’s demise was a shock treatment, I loved her “chanchalta”, I feel like I was a witness to their life & not just the reader of a book.
Its absolutely amazing & beautiful. I read it with my swetest friend & we both were left completely shaken & spellbound. None of us knew how to react to it. I hardly spoke with anyone for the whlole day. Beghum-Beliyaa, Miss D’cruz, her crazy brother, each and every character & references were simply made for it.
